Sports & Remedial Massage

Picture

Sports massage is one of the most effective ways to maintain and protect the body from aches, pains and injuries. It focuses on the soft tissues and is firmer and more targeted than the kind of massage you would get in a spa or beauty treatment centre.
Amateur and professional athletes alike use sports massage to help them recover from injuries or intensive training, reduce pain and prevent further damage as well as to warm up, cool down or relax before or after exercise.
Sports massage can help even if you don't exercise regularly. Perhaps you’re worried about muscle tension due to stress, desk work or a bad posture.
Sports Massage is suitable for everyone, not just for athletes.
Sports Massage Therapists can tailor the therapy to your specific needs, such as stiffness in the limbs, tense muscles or ligaments, or back pain.
Sports massage works deep in the muscles, realigning the muscle fibers & connective tissue and flushing away the toxins. Regular sessions will increase joint mobility, flexibility and help support good posture.

Dry Cupping Therapy

Picture

Cupping therapy is an ancient form alternative therapy which dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese and middle Eastern cultures.
During cupping therapy therapists apply glass, bamboo or silicone cups to the skin for a few minutes to create suction.
The application of cups can be used to treat a variety of conditions such as:
muscle pain and tension,
reduced joint movement, headaches, back pain and sciatica,
stress and anxiety.
During Dry Cupping, the cups are placed over several areas to create a vacuum which lifts the soft tissue and creates an upward stretch within the muscle and associated fascia. This vacuum lift helps to increase blood flow and induces a stretch effect, which results in a reduction in muscle tension and associated pain.

Dry Needling

Picture

Dry Needling is a treatment technique whereby a sterile, single-use, fine filament needle (acupuncture needle) is inserted into the muscle to assist with decreasing pain and improving function through the release of myofascial trigger points (knots in the muscle). Dry Needling assists with decreasing local muscular pain and improving function through the restoration of a muscle's ability to lengthen and shorten normally by releasing myofascial trigger points.
When a fine filament needle is inserted into the center of a myofascial trigger point, blood pools around the needle triggering the contracted muscle fibers to relax by providing those fibers with fresh oxygen and nutrients, as well as by flushing away any additional acidic chemicals. This, in turn, leads to the decompression of the local blood and nerve supply.

Ultrasound & Electrotherapy

Picture

Ultrasound therapy is a treatment modality used by physical therapists to treat pain conditions and to promote tissue healing. As well as heating and relaxing the muscles, ultrasound therapy breaks down scar tissue and increases local blood flow. All of this combines to increase healing rates in the area, making it a suitable way to speed up slow-healing or chronic issues. While ultrasound therapy is not effective for all chronic pain conditions, it may help reduce your pain if you have any of the following:
Osteoarthritis, Myofascial Pain, Bursitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Pain caused by Scar Tissue, Phantom Limb Pain,
Sprains and Strains.
There are several treatment modalities that may come under the umbrella of “electrotherapy”. These are Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Interferential Therapy (IFT).
NMES uses a device that sends electrical impulses to nerves. This input causes muscles to contract. The electrical stimulation can increase strength and range of motion, and offset the effects of disuse. It is often used to “re-train” or “re-educate” a muscle to function and to build strength after a surgery or period of disuse.
TENS is a method of pain relief involving the use of a mild electrical current. The electrical impulses can reduce the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain, which may help relieve pain and relax muscles. They may also stimulate the production of endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers.
The basic principle of
IFT is to utilise the significant physiological effects of low frequency (<250pps) electrical stimulation of nerves without the associated painful and somewhat unpleasant side effects sometimes associated with low frequency stimulation.

Joint Mobilisations & Manual Therapy

Picture

Joints are points in the body where two bones meet. They are surrounded by soft tissue, which is susceptible to injury or disease. Joint mobilisation is a form of passive movement technique for musculoskeletal conditions and is designed to relieve pain and muscle spasms, release tension and improve flexibility in a joint.
This technique, which is considered manual therapy, is usually performed by certified physical therapists. This usually involves applying force that would mimic the glide that happens in between the bones.
Joint mobilisation is usually done at a slow speed, with or without oscillations or a stretch.  This technique is usually graded and is varied based on two factors: pain tolerance of the patient and the acuity of the patient’s condition.
The main aim of joint mobilisation is to restore the normal joint play that might have been compromised by damage or injury.  Normal motion of the affected joint will be restored more quickly if it is addressed early in the treatment program. Also, mobilisation is in cases when range of motion is lacking.
The varying grades of joint mobilisation are from grades 1 – 5.  Grades 1 – 4 deals with the range of motion, starting from partial movement to end of range movement.  Grade 5 is more of manipulation than mobilisation and carried out by chiropractors or suitably qualified professionals.

Hot &/or Cold Stones

Picture

Hot Stone massage is a specialist type of massage therapy that involves the use of smooth, heated, natural basalt stones. The heated stones are used alongside traditional sports massage techniques to knead and glide over sore and tired muscles. The heat and pressure from the stones penetrates deep to relax the muscles and boost the metabolism, encouraging circulation and helping to eliminate toxins from the body.
Cold Stones consist of hand-cut, white marble stones used to perform cold stone/cryotherapy treatments. The cold stones used alone on the body are a powerful decongestant, pushing blood, fluid and waste out of overworked, chronically tense tissues. They reduce inflammation and swelling, easing muscular injury and reinvigorating the body. Cold stone therapy contracts blood vessels, which in turn stimulates the nervous system. Prostaglandin, the body’s natural pain relief, is released when applying cold treatments.

Hot and Cold Stone therapy is an advanced therapeutic massage technique, using the applications of thermotherapy with cryotherapy. This involves the use of both the heated basalt stones and the cold marble stones.

Sports Taping

Picture

Kinesiology Tape (KT) is used to support and relieve pain in muscles, joints and/or ligaments. It reduces swelling, increases mobility and enhances recovery. KT tape can be used to prevent or treat many common muscle and joint related injuries including: sprains, muscle strains, subluxations, and tendonitis. KT tape provides support and pain relief before, during, and/or after an activity.  Range of motion is not limited.  KT tape-with the body’s ability to heal itself, can provide therapeutic relief to a variety of populations and diagnoses.
When KT tape is applied, the elasticity in the KT tape gently lifts the skin from the tissues below. This gentle lifting of the skin creates a space to improve blood and lymphatic flow which ultimately helps to alleviate pressure and reduce swelling. Once blood flow is restored, oxygen and nutrients are better able to reach damaged tissues to help enhance healing.
